On tonight's episode of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, brought the appearance of highly anticipated guest star Kyra Sedgwick. In the episode, titled "Chocolate Milk," Sedgwick plays Deputy Chief Madeline Wuntch, an old nemesis of Captain Holt. Holt is surprised by her visit to the precinct, especially since she is there for an inspection! While Holt is reigniting an old feud, Jake and Terry investigate a stabbing at a hipster chocolate milk bar. Be careful if you haven't watched this week's episode yet, though, because below are SPOILERS!
Terry is getting a vasectomy, and everyone in the 99 is giving their input a.k.a. making jokes--even Santiago made a joke! Jake tells Terry he has a case about a stabbing at a chocolate milk bar, and he asks him to team up. Jake offers to drive him, since he's "every kind of friend." The precinct is getting a top to bottom inspection. Holt tells Santiago that he wants her by his side when the inspection starts, because she's a teacher's pet. Jake and Terry are at "Drk Mlk" investigating the stabbing. Rosa and Boyle are cleaning up the evidence, and Boyle tells her that he no longer has a date for his ex-wife's engagement party. He asks Rosa to go with him, but she can't. The Deputy Chief Wuntch shows up for the inspection, to which Holt asks her who is guarding Hades. (Burn!)
Terry couldn't get his vasectomy because they didn't have enough amnesia for him. Terry is high on the drugs they gave him though, and so he doesn't have a filter. (This should be good). Jake brings him back to his house and puts him to bed. Terry makes Jake promise that he won't have to get the vasectomy because he wants more kids. Next morning Terry and Jake make the "walk of shame" into the precinct. Terry tells Jake it was drugs talking and that he really does want the vasectomy. Jake decides it's his job to stop Terry, because he believes he really doesn't want it.
Holt flashes back to his old days with Deputy Chief Wuntch, before they hated each other. He tells Santiago that in 1989, Wuntch torpedoed his chances for a promotion, because the night before she came on to him to which he responds, "I'm gay."
Boyle and Gina meet in the men's room, per Boyle's request, and he asks her to the engagement party, to which she declines. Boyle's use of "bone bros" elicits a slap from Gina, and she leaves. Jake and Terry are still investigating the stabbing, and Jake tries to get Terry to realize he doesn't want the vasectomy, even tricking him to go to a couple's counselor. Terry tells Jake they are work friends and not friend-friends and goes off to get his vasectomy, not without some effort from Jake to stop him, which is obviously unsuccessful.
Wuntch tells Holt she is underwhelmed from the results of her spot-check. Santiago comes in with the letter of recommendation that Wuntch wrote for Holt, which shows the letter was very positive. Wuntch tells Holt that she's made that he tried to get her off the force, which leads to them going back in forth about the things they are still angry about, including Wuntch embarrassing herself in front of Derek Jeter. Jake tells Gina he's going to go stop Terry.
Wuntch leaves, and Santiago is worried she's going to fail them and Holt is going to get fired. She tells him to "cajole" up, because the precinct needs him. Jake goes and finds Terry, who is high again, and tells him he's only there as a friend to drive him home after the surgery. Jake tells him he solved the case, but Terry is too drugged up to understand, so he says he'll tell him tomorrow. As Terry is being wheeled into the surgery, he calls out to Jake telling him he doesn't want the vasectomy, to which Jake runs in to stop it.
Back at the precinct, Boyle comes in dressed for the "Jamaican' Me Crazy" engagement party, and Rosa comes out dressed for it, too, telling Boyle she cancelled her plans to help her. Back at Terry's house, Terry tells Jake that he is a real friend-friend. Back at the 9-9, Holt tells Santiago they received their grade--a 2.7, which is mediocre, but allows Holt to stay. He tells Santiago that he had to tell Wuntch she is the best, and that the Derek Jeter thing was his fault to get the grade. Holt gives Santiago an "A" as a thank you. Terry tells Jake that he spoke to his wife, and they're waiting on the vasectomy. Terry gives Jake carrots as a "present" because he cares about Jake and his horrible diet, and then proceeds to force Jake to eat them.
Another great episode of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE! I just love Captain Holt's funny lines, because his delivery is so deadpan that it makes it that much funnier; the "hades" joke made me crack up. I can't wait to see when Kyra Sedgwick's Deputy Chief Wuntch returns, because she and Braugher's Captain Holt have great chemistry and their back and forth is very well timed and very funny.
I liked the change of having Jake and Terry working together, because they don't get a lot of one-on-one screen time, and they play really well off each other. They are both ridiculous, but in their own very different ways, so watching them together always makes for a good laugh. Terry forcing Jake to eat carrots, and Jake assuming "carrot cake" when asked if he even likes carrots is so typical of both characters, but a fun juxtaposition when combined in the same ongoing joke. I like how they are exploring different relationships between characters, and giving more one-on-one time to a variety of pairs, from Terry and Jake, to Gina and Boyle. I also loved how Rosa came around to help Boyle, I really like their friendship, and I hope we see more of that this season.
