Seth Meyers has officially been named the new host of LATE NIGHT on NBC.
Following the news that previous host, Jimmy Fallon, would be taking over for Jay Leno at THE TONIGHT SHOW, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Meyers was rumored to be the frontrunner for LATE NIGHT - now, The New York Times reports that the comedian has officially accepted the gig.
Lorne Michaels, long-time SNL and TONIGHT SHOW producer said, "the only name that kept coming up was Seth. I think he radiates intelligence. He has a background as a performer and a writer. And because I think he doesn't like to copy anyone, I think he will find a way to make the show different and distinct and not a mirror of "The Tonight Show."
But Meyers isn't giving up too much too soon - at least not before he's 'officially' announced as the new LATE NIGHT host tomorrow at the network's upfront presentation.
"I don't want to make any broad pronouncements about how the show is going to be, whether it's going to be the same or different," Meyers said. "But I have to draw on my background in improvisational comedy and sketch comedy and stand-up comedy and try to find some mix of that."
As of now, there's no word on whether or not Meyers will step away from SNL, though it seems unlikely the daily shooting schedule of LATE NIGHT will permit him to appear on both.
Meyers will take over hosting duty in early 2014, when Fallon transitions to THE TONIGHT SHOW, which will be returning to its original home in 30 Rock in New York and will be executive-produced by Emmy Award winner Lorne Michaels ("Saturday Night Live," "30 Rock").
