This morning, REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW JERSEY star Teresa Giudice stood before a U.S. District Court judge in Newark, NJ and pleaded guilty to recent federal charges, including conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, as well as three counts of bankruptcy fraud.
In a statement to
PEOPLE made through her lawyer, Giudice commented, "Today I took a responsibility for a series of mistakes I made several years ago." She continued, "I am heartbroken that this is affecting my family. Especially my four young daughters, who mean more to me than anything in the world."
Last November, Teresa and her husband Joe Giudice had pleaded not guilty to the charges, however, both entered guilty pleas today as part of a reported deal that could bring federal prison time for both. Sentencing for Teresa will take place on July 8th, where she could receive up to two years in federal prison. Joe is expected to serve a minimum three-year sentence.
The couple requested separate trials last month, hoping that Teresa would walk away from the charges scot free. However, Teresa reveals she is now prepared to take ownership of her involvement in the crime. "I have said throughout that I respect the legal process and thus, I intend to address the court directly at sentencing," she said in her statement. "I will describe the choices I made, continue to take responsibility for my decision and express my remorse to Judge Salas and the public."
