Universal Pictures' major motion picture release "Unbroken" has been recognized with the Truly Moving Picture Award by nonprofit arts organization Heartland Film, it was announced today. The film is directed and produced by Academy Award and three-time Golden Globe Award winner Angelina Jolie. Select theatrically-released titles-entertaining films that do much more than just entertain-are honored with this designation throughout the year. Submissions are received directly from studios and producers for consideration.

"'Unbroken' is an amazing true story of heroism and of the resilience of the human spirit," said Tim Irwin, Heartland Film's artistic director. "Highlighted by its cinematography and performances, the film will make an exceptional impact on its target audience and beyond."

Jolie directs and produces "Unbroken," an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis "Louie" Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) who survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash during World War II-only to be caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a series of prisoner-of-war camps. "Unbroken" is adapted from Laura Hillenbrand's ("Seabiscuit: An American Legend") enormously popular book.

"Unbroken" opens in theaters everywhere on Christmas Day.
