The award-winning series MetroFocus premieres a new episode in the New York metro area on Thursday, October 1 at 7 p.m. on WLIW21, 8:30 p.m. on THIRTEEN and 10:30 p.m. on NJTV.

In this special edition of MetroFocus, we look ahead to American Graduate Day, a seven-hour program airing Saturday that highlights the community leaders, educators and students making a difference all across America.

American Graduate Day host and broadcast journalist Soledad O'Brien joins us to discuss what we can expect during this year's show and how academic achievement is important to the overall health of our nation.

We'll hear from one student, Demarcus Womack, as he shares his journey from a rough Orlando neighborhood to his high school graduation. Womack tells his story to college dropout-turned-graduate, basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal.

MetroFocus will also explore the link between health and education. Broadcast journalist and American Graduate Day co-host Jane Pauley explains how poor access to health care hurts kids in the classroom and what the Children's Health Fund is doing about it.

And finally, we sit down with WNET President Neal Shapiro to learn how American Graduate Day and PBS is having a positive impact on young lives.
