Simply180, a full service marketing and advertising agency in Boca Raton, FL., has partnered with Plastic Ocean Foundation to debut a critically acclaimed documentary film A PLASTIC OCEAN at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton, FL on Earth Day, April 22, 2017.
The invite-only documentary film debut is part of the marketing agency's ongoing efforts to Make a Wave of Change by raising greater awareness among residents and business leaders by promoting prevention of plastic pollution in Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach and Delray Beach.
According to Plastic Oceans Foundation, plastic litter affects local commerce, tourism, recreation and human health. A large amount of "thrown away" plastic carries toxic chemicals such as BPA, phthalates, pesticides and PCBs.Plastics in our oceans break down into tiny particles, consumed by marine life, and enter our food chain. Human exposure to these chemicals has been suggested to contribute to some cancers, and infertility, as well as immune, metabolic, cognitive and behavioral disorders.
The feature-length documentary,A Plastic Ocean, follows a team of international team of scientists, researchers and environmental activists as they set out to uncover the truth about what is lurking beneath the surface of our waters. The team traveled to and filmed in 20 locations across the globe to explore the stark realities of a modern society obsessed with plastic yet largely unaware of the harmful downstream effects it can have.
The average American uses about 500 plastic bags each year, for about twelve minutes each. This single-use mentality has led to the formation of a floating island of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas.
"I think the most powerful information from this documentary is the human health factor," said Jason Cohen, CEO of Simply180. Cohen said, "If we can get local residents to understand that plastic on our beach and in our ocean is making its way into our bodies, it will hopefully encourage change."
The film debut will take place on Earth Day, April 22, 2017 at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton, FL. The event is by invite-only. If you are interested in attending the film screening or donating to the cause, more information can be found at http://simply180.com/make-a-wave-of-change.
