Ron Burgundy returned to theaters this week in ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES - the film, starring Will Ferrell, took second at the weekend box office, however, with THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG holding on to the top spot.
ANCHORMAN 2, since its release last Wednesday, has grossed $40 million, with $26 million of that total coming in between Friday and Sunday.
With the 70's behind him, San Diego's top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), returns to the news desk in "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." Also back for more are Ron's co-anchor and wife, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), weather man Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), man on the street reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner) - All of whom won't make it easy to stay classy while taking New York and the nation's first 24-hour news channel by storm.
The film is directed by Adam McKay, produced by Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell and McKay, and also co-written by Ferrell and McKay.
THE HOBBIT, in first, grossed an additional $31.4 million, bumping its two-week total to $127.5 million.
Sony's all-star ensemble drama AMERICAN HUSTLE opened in fourth with $19.1 million, with SAVING MR. BANKS opening with a meager $9.3 million, taking the fifth spot.
