TMZ reports exclusively that AMERICAN IDOL champion Phillip Phillips has finally undergone surgery to remove troublesome kidney stones. The singer had suffered from the effects of kidney problems throughout the season of the singing competition.

According to the report, the surgery lasted six and a half hours and was performed yesterday in Los Angeles. The singer is recovering well. As TMZ first reported, Phillips was originally scheduled to have the surgery last week but was forced to delay it due to a fever and sinus infection.

Phillips' recently released single 'Home' earned the highest ever American Idol digital debut sales on record. It bowed at No. 2 with 278,000 downloads sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. The single is also the second-best digital sales week ever for an Idol contestant, after Kelly Clarkson's 2009's "My Life Would Suck Without You" which debuted with 280,000 downloads.
