On September 6, the day that marked David Muir's 2nd anniversary as anchor of "World News Tonight," he had the exclusive joint interviews with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her running mate, Senator Tim Kaine, and separately with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate, Governor Mike Pence.
"World News Tonight" finished the week with a razor-thin margin in Total Viewers (19,000 - 7.879 million vs. 7.898 million) compared to "NBC Nightly News." "World News Tonight" narrowed its Total Viewer gap week to week by 82% (19,000 vs. 103,000) to deliver its closest performance with
NBC in 9 weeks - since w/o 7/4/16.
"World News Tonight" was up year to year in Total Viewers (+1% - 7.879 million vs. 7.791 million for w/o 9/7/15) for the 3rd straight week in a row.
"World News Tonight" built on the previous week (1.664 million and 1.183 million, respectively, w/o 8/29/16) in Adults 25-54 (+1%) and Adults 18-49 (+4%).
"World News Tonight" ranked No. 1 on Wednesday in Total Viewers, leading "NBC Nightly News" head to head by 238,000 (8.101 million vs. 7.863 million on 9/7/16).
"World News Tonight" also narrowed its week-to-week gaps with "NBC Nightly News" in Adults 25-54 (-13% - 265,000 vs. 306,000) and Adults 18-49 (-5% - 219,000 vs. 231,000).
"World News Tonight" slashed nearly all of its Total Viewer margin with "NBC Nightly News" on the same week last year (-96% - 19,000 vs. 440,000 for w/o 9/7/15).
Season to date, "World News Tonight" is improving versus the same point last season in Total Viewers (+44,000 - 8.349 million vs. 8.305 million). Growing for the 4th straight year, "World News Tonight" is delivering its largest overall viewer audience in 9 years - since the 2006-07 season.
"World News Tonight" is also narrowing its Total Viewer season margin with "NBC Nightly News" by double digits (-25% - 277,000 vs. 370,000) for the 2nd straight season, posting its closest overall viewer performance with the
NBC program in 9 years - since the 2006-07 season.
For the week, "World News Tonight" led the "CBS Evening News" by 1.635 million Total Viewers, by 347,000 Adults 25-54 and by 330,000 Adults 18-49.
