ABC Wednesday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. - 6.1 million and 1.8/6 in AD18-49): On the second Wednesday of 2016, ABC significantly closed the gap week to week with an "Idol"-led FOX (into the series debut of "Second Chance") to virtually tie for No. 1 in Adults 18-49 (1.8/6 vs. 1.9/6). The Net was steady with the prior Wednesday in Adults 18-49 (1.8/6 vs. 1.9/6), which included the strong returns for its comedy block to originals and the premiere of "American Crime."
ABC's "Modern Family" moved ahead of "Idol" to rank as Wednesday's No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49 (2.6/8).
"The Middle"/"The Goldbergs" (8:00-9:00 p.m. - 6.9 million and 1.9/7 in AD18-49):
From 8:00-9:00 p.m., ABC's "The Middle" and "The Goldbergs" ranked as the No. 1 scripted shows in their respective slots for the 2nd week in a row in Adults 18-49 and continued to beat CBS' comedies in the hour (+19% - 1.9/7 vs. 1.6/5 for "2 Broke Girls"/"Mike & Molly").
"Modern Family"/"black-ish" (9:00-10:00 p.m. - 7.1 million and 2.3/7 in AD18-49):
ABC moved up to win the 9:00 p.m. hour in Adults 18-49 with "Modern Family" and "black-ish," holding a 15% advantage over its nearest competition (2.3/7 vs. 2.0/6 - CBS' "Criminal Minds" and NBC's "L&O: SVU" tied). Also in the hour,
ABC nearly doubled Fox's "Idol"-driven debut of "Second Chance" (+92% - 2.3/7 vs. 1.2/4).
"American Crime" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 4.3 million and 1.1/4 in AD18-49):
Despite a slightly lower lead-in at 10:00 p.m., "American Crime" was steady with its week-earlier opener on the night in Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 vs. 1.2/4). In addition, "American Crime" grew over its premiere in Men 18-34 (+20%) and Men 25-54 (+9%), matching the series' 2nd-highest ratings ever - behind only its series debut on 3/5/15. Please Note: "American Crime" jumped +50% over its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating after 3 days of TV playback (1.2 rating to a 1.8 rating), tying the series' largest-ever playback increase.
Projections Rationale:
Lifts vs. L+SD are based on 2015-16 season averages for originals (excluding the premiere).
Returning shows: Profile based on same show (either premiere or averages for originals).
New Series: Based on similar series.
A note about DVR penetration: DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample is currently at 48% in U.S. TV Homes. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which are increasingly not reflected in the overnight Live + Same Day numbers. As a result, the Live + 7 Day ratings are the most accurate Nielsen measure to gauge the size of the TV audience.
