A prequel of "Black-ish" is in early development at ABC, according to Variety. The prequel would focus on Tracee Ellis Ross' character Rainbow.
A Rainbow-centric episode of the series will be filmed in March and will air on a date that has yet to be determined.
The episode could serve as a backdoor pilot for the prequel, which would be the second "Black-ish" spinoff so far. Freeform's "Grown-ish," follows Johnson daughter Zoey (Yara Shahidi) in college. The series was just renewed for a third season and ranks at the top comedy among women 18-49 and females 12-34.
Ellis Ross won the Golden Globe for her role in the show in 2017 and she has received three Best Actress in a Comedy Emmy nominations for her role in "Black-ish."
Black-ish follows parents Andre "Dre" (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow (Ellis Ross) Johnson who want to give their children the best. But their offspring's childhood is turning out to be much different than theirs. They now realize at least two things: There is a price to pay for giving their children more than what they ever had, and these loving parents are totally unprepared for the fallout.
