ABC Family's original comedy series Baby Daddy and free online birth control support network Bedsider.org have combined efforts to produce a three-part series of webisodes promoting contraception use among sexually active young adults. All three webisodes will premiere on the "Baby Daddy" official website at www.abcfamily.com/babydaddy beginning Thursday, August 1st, following an all-new episode of "Baby Daddy" airing July 31st, which features a pregnancy scare for one of the show's characters.
In the "Baby Daddy" episode airing Wednesday, July 31st, at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT titled "Test Anxiety," Bonnie finds out that Danny's girlfriend Amy (guest star Lacey Chabert) has taken a pregnancy test and struggles to keep the secret. Danny tries to win over Amy's father (guest star Andy Buckley), who clearly dislikes him.
"Bedsider.org's partnership with
Baby Daddy is a perfect fit," commented Lawrence Swiader, Senior Director of Digital Media for Bedsider.org. "A group of cool, funny, single twenty-something friends - one of whom already has a child from an unplanned pregnancy - is a natural backdrop for conversations about contraception. For Ben, Tucker, Danny, and Riley - and for millions of real people like them - using birth control is just a part of everyday life. It is simply what you do when you're not ready to be a parent yet. And that's what Bedsider.org is all about."
According to The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, most single young adults have sex, most say they do not want to get pregnant or cause a pregnancy right now, and most have used some form of contraception at some point in their lives. Still, 70% of pregnancies to single women ages 18-29 are described by the women themselves as unplanned. That's where Bedsider.org comes in. Bedsider.org is an online birth control support network designed to help women find the method of birth control that's right for them and to help them use it consistently and effectively.
Additional facts about unplanned pregnancy and birth control in the U.S. from The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy:
7 in 10 pregnancies to single young women are described by the women themselves as unplanned.
Half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned and the majority of those are to women in their 20s.
Women in their 20s have nearly twice as many unplanned pregnancies as teens do, and for many of them and their children, the consequences are quite similar.
99% of women in the U.S. who have had sex have used some form of birth control at some point in their lives.
95% of Americans say that for people who are trying not to get pregnant, using birth control is taking personal responsibility.
"Baby Daddy," which launched as
ABC Family's #1 comedy series in the network's history, follows Ben (Jean-Luc Bilodeau), a young man in his early 20s living the life of a bachelor as a bartender in New York City with his buddy, Tucker (Tahj Mowry), and his brother, Danny (Derek Theler), a professional hockey player. Their lives are turned upside down when they come home one day to find a baby girl left on the doorstep by an ex-girlfriend of Ben's. After much deliberation, Ben decides to raise the baby with the help of his friends and his protective and sometimes over-bearing mother, Bonnie (Melissa Peterman), and his close female friend, Riley (Chelsea Kane), who has had a secret crush on him since childhood. Riley is hopeful that Ben will finally take notice, but she doesn't realize that Ben's brother, Danny, is harboring a secret crush on her. The series is created and executive produced by Dan Berendsen ("The Nine Lives of Chloe King," "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" and "Hannah Montana: The Movie").
