Cinema/Chicago and the Chicago International Film Festival have announced the winners for the 52nd Chicago International Television Awards.
The awards were presented to an audience of 200 guests at the
AMC River East 21 on April 20, 2016.
WGN Anchor Dan Ponce and WYCC-PBS Anchor Robin Robinson hosted the special evening honoring outstanding voices in the television industry. Four special awards were presented throughout the night.HBO received a Commitment to Excellence in Television Productions Award for their stellar history producing premium programming which was accepted by Executive Vice President of Production at HBOBruce Richmond. Emmy-Award winning Actress, Director and Playwright Regina Taylor was presented with a Career Achievement Award for her dynamic presence on television over the past two decades. Entertainment reporter and critic Bill Zwecker was presented with the Chicago Award, honoring a personality that has become synonymous with the city itself; and Janet Davies was presented with the Chicago Legend Award for her astonishing career as a broadcast entertainment reporter.
In the competition portion of the awards ceremony, the Silver Hugos went to Beast Editorial, iris NewYork, Whitehouse Post, Leo Burnett and DDB Argentina for commercials and to
NBC Universal("Chicago Med") for productions. The evening's top prize, the Gold Hugo, was presented to WDR(Germany) for "Agora - From Democracy to Market" for productions and "The Man and the Dog" from DDB and Whitehouse Post for commercials. Winners were selected from a pool of entrants from over 20 countries around the world including Macau, Poland, India, Japan and many more.
For the 52nd year, WTTW11 presented a program of commercials competing for the Audience Choice Award, where home audiences were encouraged to vote online for their favorite commercial. This distinguished honor went to Gold Hugo-winner "The Man and the Dog" from DDB Argentina andWhitehouse Post, the first time ever that a commercial has won both awards.
The Awards Ceremony wrapped up three days of expanded programming which included special screenings and panel discussions with television industry leaders. The program featured a panel of local TV-makers; a screening of FOX's "Empire" followed by a discussion with key crewmembers; the premiere episode of the fifth season of "Veep" from HBO, followed by a discussion with actor Gary Cole; and the pilot premiere of Amazon's "Patriot" followed by a discussion with writer/director Steve Conrad and actorTerry O'Quinn joined by key crew members.
