20th Century Fox Positions MAGIC: THE GATHERING as New Mega-Franchise

The Hollywood Reporter writes that 20th Century Fox has acquired the screen rights to the Hasbro card game MAGIC: THE GATHERING. Simon Kinberg (X-Men, Fantastic Four) will produce what the studio hopes will become a major new movie franchise.

Wizards of the Coast created the MAGIC: THE GATHERING trading card game in 1993. In MAGIC, players pit cards against one another that feature fantasy creatures with various weapons, spells and abilities. The rarer the card, the more it's worth.

Since the '90s, the game has gained a global following, and tournaments are now staged around the world and online.

The official description of the game reads: "Magic: The Gathering is the first and most widely played trading card game. Players take on the role of Planeswalkers - powerful mages who battle others for glory, knowledge and conquest. Their weapons include spells, creatures, and artifacts gathered from a vast Multiverse of unique fantasy worlds. With more than 12 million players and fans worldwide, Magic is printed in 11 languages and played in more than 70 countries."
