On Sunday, October 6, 2013 VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert's 2013-2014 Season gets off to a light-hearted start with THE STRESSED OUT IMPRESARIO, a spoof on the antics of dueling divas - and divos! - based on Mozart's comedy of 1786, Der Schauspieldirektor. "Conceived as an appetizer for our whole season, I wanted to showcase a number of emerging talents," said General Director Guillermo Silva-Marin, "and what better frame could there be than Mozart's delicious send up of aspiring singers and their egos?"
Silva-Marin willingly gives himself stress and the pleasure of featuring the talents of sopranos Leigh-Ann Allen, Tessa Laengert and Vania Chan, mezzo-soprano Christina Campsall, tenor Keenan Viau and baritone Domenico Sanfilippo. Mozart's brilliant score will be amplified by arias and ensembles from such works as COSI FAN TUTTE, DON GIOVANNI and IDOMENEO as well as Handel's SEMELE and ALCINA. Robert Cooper and the VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert Chorus will compete for the limelight as Impresario Silva-Marin and Music Director Raisa Nakhmanovich endeavour to keep their stress levels under control.
Not to be outdone by Canada's Got Talent and other reality shows, there will be a twist to the VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert proceedings when the audience gets to give their opinion and vote for both the program and casting.
Commemorative anniversaries for three great composers from three different musical eras will be celebrated this year and VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert's own 40th Anniversary Season highlights the brilliance of this operatic legacy. The season continues on Sunday, November 24, 2013 with the Canadian premiere of Benjamin Britten's GLORIANA, generously supported by the estate of Stephen Ireland, a past member of Opera in Concert's Board of Directors.
Rameau's HIPPOLYTE ET ARICIE will be presented on Sunday February 2, 2014 with conductor Kevin Mallon and the season closes on Sunday, March 23, 2014 with Giuseppe Verdi's STIFFELIO.
