In celebration of Valentine's Day, on Sunday, February 14 Utah Opera will present Bon Appétit!, a charming, one-act opera composed by Lee Hoiby and inspired by American chef Julia Child at 6:30 pm at OP Rockwell on Main Street, Park City. The delicious evening of laughter includes a 10-course catered meal by Culinary Crafts and entertainment in the form of the short opera, as the flamboyant master chef teaches the makings of a classic French chocolate cake - Le Gâteau au Chocolat L'Éminence Brune. Tickets are $175 per person and available at: www.culinarycrafts.com/pop-up-restaurants/
The evening features star of The Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Victoria Livengood, who last appeared on the Utah Opera stage in the 2014 production of "Salome", and for whom the Julia Child role is a signature.
"On occasion the stars align for love and a fantastic dinner theater opportunity and this February 14 we have an opportunity for both," said Utah Opera Artistic Director Christopher McBeth. "In this short, one-act opera the famous chef prepares the perfect gateau au chocolat and entertains us with beautiful music all at the same time, I assure you, her signature dessert and your special night will be one of the sweetest in memory!"
This 10-course menu, set by Mary Crafts-Homer, CEO and Founder of Culinary Crafts, is an ultimate expression of classic and contemporary French cooking. It will transport guests across the ocean to an intimate French bistro, where aromas of fresh baked bread, veal ragout simmering on the stove, and succulent roasted chicken waft through the air. Waiters will be at the door to welcome guests with passed hors d'oeuvres, and Mary, our culinary tour guide, will discuss highlights of the menu and its preparation. Of course, the piece de resistance will be the final dessert course...Le Gâteau au Chocolat L'Éminence Brune.... Julia's glorious dark chocolate cake!
"This is a one-of-a-kind evening. This menu, prepared this way, will never occur again," explained Mary Crafts-Homer, who launched the pop up restaurant experience August 2015. "The restaurant pops up for a night, then disappears, offering you a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience."
"We are excited to partner with Utah Opera in this pop-up restaurant and opera event because it signifies the start of many more live music opportunities in our space," said OP Rockwell owner Scott Thomson. "OP Rockwell is all about creating a dynamic live music experience that breaks the norm and offers unexpected and highly entertaining performances from a widely diverse spectrum of musical genres."
