Taking place at Studio 308, October 20th and 21st.
Prepare to be spellbound as Tulsa Opera invites you into the enigmatic world of Gian Carlo Menotti's opera, The Medium. Performed in the intimate Studio 308, this theatrical sensation, directed by Jen Alden and featuring the musical direction of Lyndon Meyer, promises to deliver a spine-tingling performance that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats. It is a perfect spooky event just in time for Halloween.
The Medium is a gripping opera that revolves around Madame Flora, a woman for whom fake seances are business as usual. However, on a fateful night, the usual façade shatters, leading to a series of chilling events. Delving into the dark and supernatural elements of human psychology, it explores themes of deception, guilt, and the blurred line between reality and the afterlife.
Director Alden shares her perspective, saying, "This opera is a work that explores the darkest aspects of the human psyche and promises to leave a lasting impression on all who witness its gripping narrative."
Enhancing the experience, an hour before the performance, the doors to Studio 308 will creak open, unveiling pre-show mysteries. Tarot readings, fortune tellers, and eerie photo opportunities await. A cash bar will be open before the performances.
Artistic Director Aaron Beck remarks, "Prepare to be drawn into a realm where the audience becomes a part of the story, where the boundary between the spectator and the spectacle blurs, all tied together with the magnificent voices only opera can provide."
The cast of The Medium includes Mary Ann Stewart as Madame Flora, Bree Nichols as Monica, Justin Tomlinson as Toby, Maddie Breedlove as Mrs. Nolan, Paige Dickey as Mrs. Gobineau, and Kevin Eckard as Mr. Gobineau.
Composed and written by Gian Carlo Menotti, the opera is performed in English with piano accompaniment by Music Director Lyndon Meyer. Costumes designed by Carmen Gilbert, wig and makeup design by Sable Hughes, lighting design by Matthew Reed, and set/prop design by Ben Johnson. Viewer discretion is advised due to intense topics and scenes that may contain elements of violence. Recommended for those ages 13 and up.
The Medium will be performed at Studio 308 on October 20 and 21, 2023, as part of Tulsa Opera's 2023- 24 season. In 2023, Tulsa Opera proudly celebrates its 75th year of bringing the magic of opera to the heart of Oklahoma.
