Opera Orlando will open its 2023-24 All for Art season On the MainStage with Puccini's tragic masterwork Tosca. Join Opera Orlando in Steinmetz Hall at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts as the Company stages a brand new production of one of the world’s most famous operas for the first time in one of the world’s most beautiful theaters. The production will run for two performances on October 27 at 7:30 p.m. and October 29 at 2 p.m. Individual tickets are now on sale.
This taut melodrama tells the story of the celebrated and passionate opera diva, Floria Tosca, who finds herself caught in a web of religious and political intrigue, betrayal, and jealousy. Tosca’s lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, is suspected of assisting an escaped political prisoner, and the corrupt chief of police, Baron Scarpia, imprisons and tortures him. Scarpia, who lusts after Tosca, uses his power over Cavaradossi to try and manipulate her into giving herself to him, but Tosca fights for her true love, causing disastrous results for everyone involved.
“Tosca is quite a thriller and is the perfect way to launch our ‘All for Art’ season,” says Opera Orlando artistic director Grant Preisser. “It is amazing to have a hall worthy of Puccini here in Orlando, and this all new production featuring an incredible international cast, our fantastic Youth
Company members, and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit will surely impress our audiences. I am also very excited to have acclaimed conductor Eiki Isomura and stage director Josh Shaw join us as the creative team for this production. They have previously worked together at their respective companies Opera in the Heights and Pacific Opera Project, and their approach to this Tosca is sure to be electrifying.”
Japanese-American conductor Eiki Isomura has led over 100 performances of more than 25 operas, which have drawn significant and consistent critical praise. He has worked with companies including Houston Grand Opera and Opera Philadelphia, and currently serves as artistic and interim general director, as well as principal conductor, at Opera in the Heights. Mr. Isomura also serves on the Opera America Artistic Services Council, and is a champion for emerging artists and a dedicated advocate for the performance and development of new classical music. He will be making his Company debut with Tosca.
Award-winning stage director Josh Shaw, has been named one of America’s Top 30 Innovators in Classical Music, and is the founding artistic director and CEO of Pacific Opera Project (POP), described as “L.A.’s most exciting new opera company.” He has directed more than 100 productions at companies including Opera Santa Barbara, New Orleans Opera, Gulfshore Opera, and others. His work as a producer has been praised for his high-powered, savvy productions that “enthrall and captivate audiences.” Mr. Shaw was last with Opera Orlando in 2018, directing his hilarious Star Trek-inspired production of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, and the Company is happy to welcome him back in October for this production
Joining Maestro Isomura and Josh Shaw, is a world-class cast headlined by internationally acclaimed Greek soprano Eleni Calenos in the title role, singing the opera’s most famous aria, “Vissi d’arte...” Celebrated tenor Nathan Granner will play the dashing artist Cavaradossi, performing “E lucevan le stelle…,” and baritone Daniel Scofield makes his role debut as the villainous Scarpia. Additional artists include Opera Orlando favorite Lloyd Reshard, Jr. as Angelotti, Metropolitan Opera baritone Stefan Szkafarowsky as the Sacristan, 2023-24 Studio Artists, and members of the Opera Orlando Chorus and Youth Company.
