Edo de Waart will conduct Der Rosenkavalier on October 13, 16, and 19, replacing Met Music Director James Levine who is having surgery to repair a herniated disc.

As announced yesterday, Levine is expected to return for the new production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann, which opens on December 3. He will conduct Der Rosenkavalier on January 1, 6, 9 matinee (which will be transmitted into movie theaters worldwide as part of The Met: Live in HD series), and 15.

De Waart made his Met debut in 1998 leading Die Zauberflöte and returned the following season to conduct Le Nozze di Figaro. He is currently Music Director of the Milwaukee Symphony, whose cooperation in rearranging his schedule has made it possible for him to conduct these performances of Der Rosenkavalier. He also serves as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Holland. De Waart is widely recognized as a conductor of both opera and concert repertory with the world's leading opera houses and orchestras and has previously led Der Rosenkavalier at the Paris Opera.

Der Rosenkavalier features Renée Fleming as the Marschallin, Susan Graham as Octavian, Miah Persson as Sophie in her Met debut, Ramón Vargas as the Italian Singer, Hans-Joachim Ketelsen as Faninal, and Kristinn Sigmundsson as Baron Ochs.
