This coming Sunday, February 2, 2014 at 8:00 p.m.The Boston Conservatory presents a Dirty Paloma production; a FREE concert entitled "FREAK OUT!" performed by soprano Aliana de la Guardia and pianist Tae Kim featuring the music of composer Andy Vores from his highly acclaimed chamber opera, No Exit, adapted from the play by Jean-Paul Sartre, and his song cycle entitled Cleopatra on poems by Barbara Chase-Riboud. Additional works by Luciano Berio, Masaki Hasebe and Tae Kim. The concert will take place in Studio 401 of The Boston Conservatory Theater at 31 Hemenway Street, Boston, MA. ABOUT THE ARTISTSAndy Vores was born Wales and raised in England. He studied composition at Lancaster University with Edward Cowie. From 1982 he worked in London as Lecturer and Composer-in-Residence at The City University. In 1986 he was a Fellow in Composition at Tanglewood, studying with Oliver Knussen. He has lived in Boston since 1990.From 1999 to 2001 he was Composer-in-Residence to the BankBoston Celebrity Series, and from 2002 to 2005 Composer-in-Residence to the New England Philharmonic. In 2001 he was appointed as Chair of Composition, Theory, and Music History at The Boston Conservatory.
Aliana de la Guardia is a soprano, actor, teacher, and producer hailed by Stuff Magazine as "an anomalous player on the Boston music scene." The Cuban-American performer began training in theater and film at a young age in her native New Jersey and completed studies in voice and opera at The Boston Conservatory (B.M. '05 and M.M. '07).An avid performer of New Music, de la Guardia has performed the works of many of the leading composers of our time such as Berg, Birtwistle, Gorecki, Harvey, Kurtág, Sciarrino, Schoenberg and among others. She is committed to developing new vocal repertoire frequently collaborating with living composers to commission new works. The Arts Fuse writes: "Her natural sound is lovely, as clear and powerful as grain alcohol..."She a co-founder and General Manager of Guerilla Opera, with which she has co-produced and premiered many new operas with roles written specifically for her, including premiering the role of Estelle in No Exit by Andy Vores in 2009; she is half of the avant-garde voice and sax duo KOEK; and her production company Dirty Paloma has been bringing innovative concerts to Boston and beyond since 2010. Additional New Music performances include: The Boston Conservatory New Music Festival, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Center for Contemporary Opera, Firebird Ensemble, Harvard Group for New Music, I/O Ensemble, Ludovico Ensemble, and Xanthos Ensemble. Her experience extends to standard classical repertoire as well including performances with Boston Lyric Opera, Granite State Opera, New England Philharmonic, Lorelei Ensemble and Cappella Clausura, among others. Additional engagements include guest speaker at the National Opera Association 2011 Convention in Memphis, TN ('12) and guest panelist at Boston Lyric Opera's "Night at the Opera" series ('12). Pianist Tae Kim is hailed as a "highly skilled improviser" by the New York Times. His rare blend of rigorous execution and whimsical styling creates an interpretation of the classical repertoire all his own - think Mozart's impromptu jam sessions from "Amadeus", minus the silly wigs.Kim has gained widespread recognition as a classical pianist and improvisational artist. As part of the ongoing Piano at South Station, Kim regularly plays on Wednesdays in what is considered as "Boston's living room." He has soloed with many ensembles, including Cambridge Philharmonic, Yurodivy Chamber Orchestra, Hemenway Strings, and The Boston Conservatory Orchestra. The Boston Globe praised his "sparkling performance" of Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto with The Boston Conservatory Orchestra as a "glimpse of radiant talent." He regularly collaborates with composer Tod Machover, utilizing his unique talent for classical improvisation in such productions as Central Square Theatre's 2012 play Remembering H.M. and the 2013 Edinburgh Festival's "Repertoire Remix". He has received degrees from The Boston Conservatory (B.M. '05) and the New England Conservatory (M.M.
