Toronto, July 6, 2015... Summer Opera Lyric Theatre continues its 29 year tradition as the only performance haven for opera lovers in late summer. Since 1986, Guillermo Silva Marin has led aspiring young artists through an intensive 8 week course of study concentrating on character development in opera through text and music. These weeks have culminated in a series of performances showcasing the young artists at the Robert Gill Theatre, University of Toronto. The only summer course of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area, alumni include Kristina Szabo, David Pomeroy, Nora Sourouzian, Joseph Kaiser, Keith Klassen and Joshua Hopkins.

In 2015, the season opens with DER VAMPYR at 8 pm on Friday, July 31 with further performances of Marschner's blood-soaked saga on Saturday, August 8 at 8 pm and Sunday, August 2 and Wednesday August 5 at 2 pm. Performances of Strauss' ARIADNE AUF NAXOS are on Saturday, August 1 and Saturday, August 8 at 2 pm and Tuesday, August 4 and Thursday, August 6 at 8 pm. Written by von Flotow, MARTHA takes the stage on Saturday, August 1, Wednesday, August 5 and Friday August 7 at 8 pm and Sunday August 9 at 2 pm. "This summer we concentrate on ensemble and all three of these great works require that the large SOLT casts interact with their artist colleagues in an intimate fashion," Silva-Marin commented recently from the rehearsal hall at the Edward Jackman Centre. Continuing, he expressed enthusiasm for the three music directors this summer including the debuts of Natasha Fransblow (MARTHA), Maria H.Y. Jung (DER VAMPYR) and Narmina Afandiyeva, returning for ARIADNE AUF NAXOS.

The 38 SOLT participants for this summer have been chosen after auditions in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto and come from hometowns, conservatories and universities across Canada, including professionals already in the national and international arena. Silva-Marinis stage director for all four works and guest lecturers include Stuart Hamilton, Catherine Robbin, Diane Loeb, Kathy Domoney, Wayne Gooding, Kevin Mallon, Derek Bate, and Henry Ingram.

All performances take place at the Robert Gill Theatre, University of Toronto, 214 College St. (entrance on St. George). Subscription packages for $60, single tickets are $28, $22 for students and seniors. The theatre is air-conditioned and convenient to public parking and transit. The theatre is not wheelchair accessible.
