State Opera of South Australia Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Timothy Sexton has officially announced the company's 2015 season of great operas and opera greats.
The season will feature much-loved classics such as Don Giovanni, Faust and the Verdi Requiem as well as a number of smaller works. On top of the action-packed season, SOSA will also launch new membership groups and opportunities to get to know the many talented people who work behind the scenes.
"The 2015 season features two grand opera experiences, an operatic oratorio and a host of smaller works, both new and old, all of them falling under the aegis of our overriding theme for 2015, 'for the love'," Mr Sexton said.
'For the love of pleasure' the 2015 season will kick off with Mozart's Don Giovanni in the spellbinding Göran Järvefelt production. Featuring sumptuous sets and fabulous costumes, this timeless and stylish production offers a fantastic night of entertainment for seasoned opera goers and newbies alike.
Adelaide-born, UK based baritone Grant Doyle will spread his seductive mischief in the production and will be accompanied by a stellar supporting cast, including Douglas McNicol, Teresa La Rocca, Virgilio Marino and Sharon Prero. This will be Mozart to die for!
According to Mr Sexton the next production in August, Gounod's Faust, heralds the return of truly grand opera to Adelaide.
"In August, 'for the love of temptation' we will present Gounod's Faust based on the famous Royal Opera House, Covent Garden production. Complete with a full ballet and towering sets that will fill the Festival Theatre's stage. The music is among the most beautiful that Gounod ever wrote," Mr Sexton said.
The production features a who's who of South Australian and national opera stars, crowned by the spectacular trio of James Egglestone as Faust, Kate Ladner as Marguerite and Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Mephistopheles.
"During the season of Faust audiences will also be treated to two performances of Verdi's fabulous Requiem - a work of operatic genius which changed the face of choral music forever," Mr Sexton said.
Don Giovanni, Faust and the Verdi Requiem will be brilliantly supported by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and acclaimed State Opera Chorus.
Significantly in 2015 in a bid to encourage more awareness of the many layers of opera and to encourage a greater understanding of the diverse, talented and incredibly dedicated people who make opera come to life, SOSA will launch new membership groups and events to cater for the different levels of opera experience and knowledge.
"It is vital that we make opera as accessible to as many different interest groups as possible. We want to dispel common misconceptions many people have about opera and give people the opportunity to get to know our team. Our productions and events are for everyone to enjoy!" Mr Sexton said.
