Up in Central Park is a Broadway musical with a book by Herbert Fields and Dorothy Fields, lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and music by Sigmund Romberg.
Produced by Michael Todd, the show opened on January 27, 1945 and ran for 504 performances. The musical is set in New York in the 1870s.
Our hero is an ambitious investigative journalist working for New York Times, John Matthews (Scott Guthrie), the villain was Boss Tweed (Peter Cormican) and his "ring" of Tammany Hall lackeys (Ted Bouton, Roger Rifkin, David Garry, John Allen Biles). John and Harper's Weekly illustrator Thomas Nast (Travis Morin) are especially interested in the fraud connected with constructing Central Park. Rosie (Natalie Newman) and her best friend Bessie (Chelsea Barker) are daughters of two park superintendents (John Coughlan and Richard Rodgers).
John tries to steer Rosie away from trouble but bright lights and fame lead her temporarily astray. Of course Love and Justice triumph in the end. The good guys and the bad guys are Jeffrey Pew, Graham Bailey, Sam Eggers, Andrew Mauney, Michael Mott and Gavriel Savit. The good girls and the less-than-good girls are Kari Ringer, Lauren French and Emily Glick.
