Fall Season

Die Fledermaus
Johann Strauss, Jr.
Operetta in three acts, performed in English
Nov. 1, 3(m), 5, 7, 13, 15(m)
An elaborate scheme is hatched to expose the womanizing ways of the wealthy Eisenstein as he attempts to enjoy a night of frivolity at an elaborate Viennese ball before going to jail. Hidden identities and amorous intrigues mixed with a splash of mistaken identity make for a night of delight in this whimsical operetta where champagne is king!

The Little Sweep
(Youth Opera production)
Benjamin Britten
Opera in three scenes, performed in English
Nov. 9 (5:30pm) & 10 (12:30pm)
The acclaimed Sarasota Youth Opera will present a fullscale production of Benjamin Britten's charming opera. A group of children, with the help of a kind nursery maid, work to free a young chimney sweep apprentice from his cruel master. This enchanting work, which was written to help introduce young people to opera, will be sure to delight children and adults alike.

Winter Opera Festival

Il trovatore
Giuseppe Verdi
Opera in four acts, performed in Italian
Feb. 8 (7pm), 12, 16(m), 22, 25, 27
Mar. 2(m), 7, 14, 22
A troubador's quest for love, a soldier's lust, and a mother's undying thirst for vengeance is the story of Verdi's dramatic opera. Premiered in 1853, Il trovatore features such operatic favorites as the great "Di quella pira" for tenor and the famous "Anvil Chorus."

The Barber of Seville
Gioachino Rossini
Opera in two acts, performed in Italian
Feb. 15, 18, 20, 23(m), 26, 28
Mar. 7(m), 15(m), 21
One of the most beloved works in the operatic repertory returns to Sarasota Opera's stage. Determined to win the heart of the beautiful Rosina with charm and wit, rather than money, Count Almaviva enlists the help of Figaro, the Barber of Seville, to steal her away from her guardian, Dr. Bartolo.

The Flying Dutchman
Richard Wagner
Opera in three acts, performed in German
Mar. 1, 4, 6, 9(m), 12, 15, 23(m)
Ancient lore comes to life in the tale of a cursed sea captain forced to wander the world, ultimately finding redemption in the selfless gift of a woman's love. Last seen in Sarasota in 2000, the unbridled weight and force of Wagner's The Flying Dutchman will enthrall audiences as they voyage through this mystical world.
Jérusalem
Giuseppe Verdi
Opera in four acts, performed in French
Mar. 8, 11, 13, 16(m), 19, 22(m)
An epic tale of warriors, family rivalry, and jealousy evolves into a story of forgiveness. Based on his earlier opera, I Lombardi alla prima crociata, Verdi's Jérusalem abounds with rousing choruses, beautiful ensembles, and exciting arias. Jérusalem will be the 30th installment of the Verdi Cycle, and an experience you won't want to miss.
