NYC-based chamber opera ensemble Rhymes With Opera opens their 2014-15 season with Heartbreak Express In Concert on November 14 and 15 at the HB Playwrights Theater (124 Bank Street, New York, NY). RWO will perform a concert presentation of excerpts from composer George Lam and librettist John Clum's new opera Heartbreak Express.
Heartbreak Express follows two pairs of Dolly Parton superfans waiting to meet their idol. Sisters Darlene and LuAnne entered an essay contest and won the chance to meet Dolly. Darlene is certain that this encounter will change their lives for the better, but LuAnne is not so sure. Long-time partners Don and Travis have amassed a huge collection of Dolly memorabilia. They have spent their life savings creating a new Dolly doll, and they need Dolly's blessing to manufacture it. Each of the characters are affected by this opportunity to meet their idol, but not in ways they expect.
This performance will feature arias and ensemble pieces that Rhymes With Opera has performed last season at NYC's Roulette, York College CUNY, the Cornelia Street Cafe, the Firehouse Space, the National Opera Center, and Baltimore's City Arts Gallery, as well as brand-new excerpts performed for the first time, accompanied by the six-piece Rhymes With Orchestra, conducted by Joon Andrew Choi.
Excerpts from the new opera will be interspersed with country vocal trio Siren (Colleen Harris, Lindsay Morgan, Shanna Sharp) performing unique covers of Dolly Parton's most memorable songs, woven together into an evening that explores both the music of Dolly Parton and her universal appeal as one of country music's biggest stars of all time.
Heartbreak Express In Concert will be performed at the HB Playwrights Theater in the West Village on November 14th and 15th, at 8pm. For tickets and more information, visit www.rhymeswithopera.org. VIP tickets: $50; general admission: $20.
