This summer, 40 of the most exciting young singers from every corner of the globe will converge upon Los Angeles to compete in Operalia, the prestigious voice competition created byPlácido Domingo to discover the next generation of international operatic superstars. This year's contest, its third time in Los Angeles, will be hosted by LA Opera from August 25 through 30, 2014. Tickets to the competition's final round-a Gala Finals Concert conducted by Mr. Domingo at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at 7:00pm on Saturday, August 30-are now on sale.
"Operalia is one of the most personally fulfilling highlights of my year," said Mr. Domingo. "An important lesson that I quickly learned in my own career was the realization that sheer talent alone isn't enough to sustain a life in opera. It is absolutely essential for young singers to come to the attention of the influential conductors, managers and directors who can further their professional ambitions. That is the mission of Operalia. I am thrilled and proud that LA Opera will host this year's competition, and I can't wait to discover the incredible voices that will be introduced to opera lovers this summer."
Committed to excellence, elegance and consistency, Rolex is once again proud to present Plácido Domingo's Operalia, the World Opera Competition, marking its 13th consecutive collaboration.
About Operalia:
Operalia, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary last year, was founded by Plácido Domingo in 1993 to discover the best emerging young opera singers of today. His goal is to attract singers from around the world to be heard by established international opera impresarios in the most prestigious and competitive showcase in the world. Mr. Domingo is actively present throughout the competition. Although he does not vote, he supervises the proceedings and is committed to give artistic and career advice to all of the participants. Participating or even winning a prize in this competition is only the beginning of every singer's relationship with Mr. Domingo and Operalia. Since the distinguished jury is primarily comprised of general directors or casting directors from important international opera houses, the jurors frequently engage contestants to perform in subsequent productions at their theaters.
Participation in Operalia has proven to be a vital stepping stone to a young singer's career. Previous winners include many stars currently appearing on opera stages around the world: René Barbera, Joseph Calleja, José Cura, Joyce DiDonato, Elizabeth Futral, He Hui, Ana MarÃa MartÃnez, Ryan McKinny, Lisette Oropesa, Eric Owens, Ailyn Perez, Erwin Schrott, Nina Stemme, Rolando Villazón, Pretty Yende and Sonya Yoncheva, among many others. In 2012, soprano Janai Brugger, a member of LA Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program at the time, was the first-place female Operalia winner.
