Having completed their presentation of Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi in September, Washington Concert Opera presents its second performance of the season, the rarely performed opera, Guntram, by Richard Strauss. In his 13th season with Washington Concert Opera, Artistic Director and Conductor, Maestro Antony Walker, takes the stage for this highly ambitious presentation.
The performance was presented yesterday March 1, 2015 at the Lisner Stage at George Washington University. Scroll down for photos from the concert!
Guntram, Strauss' first opera, follows in the footsteps of his extremely evocative tone poems and foreshadows many later works including Arabella, Daphne and Die frau ohne schatten. Critically acclaimed heldentenor, Robert Dean Smith, sang the title role, while celebrated soprano Marjorie Owens sang Freihild, and Tom Fox joined her as the Duke. This presentation of Guntram is only the second ever offered in the United States.
