OperaLancaster Presents MAD ABOUT MOZART as Part of New Season Tonight

Genius gone wild; child prodigy makes enemies as a young man, fails to find permanent employment and dies young. That could be the sensationalist headline about Mozart's life. But what do we find in his music?

OperaLancaster's opera cabaret, Mad about Mozart, will help answer that question based on opera selections and chamber music performed by local musicians. Leading this journey of discovery will be the Master of Ceremonies, a disgruntled musicology doctoral student. On the program are highlights from Mozart's operatic masterpieces - Cosí, Figaro, Magic Flute, and Don Giovanni - not as grand opera, but reconceived for the intimacy of the Ware Center. Guest performers include Micheal Jamanis, Jr., on violin and a woodwind quintet.

Making their solo debuts with OperaLancaster in a comic quartet, four young singers from Millersville University and Lancaster Bible College will be highlighted. In a rare treat for the audience, Simon Andrews, well-known local conductor and composer, will appear, singing a parody of a French Horn piece.

Performances are tonight, October 2, at 7:30 pm, and on Sunday, October 5, at2:00 pm at Millersville University's downtown Ware Center. Tickets are $21 for adults, $16 for groups, seniors and veterans. One child's ticket is free with the purchase of an adult's.

About OperaLancaster
Founded in 1952 as Lancaster Opera Workshop, OperaLancaster has produced over 100 opera productions in the Lancaster community. It is one of the only companies in the Commonwealth - outside of Philadelphia - to present fully staged productions of operas and musical dramas.

The organization is made up of a professional staff, volunteers and performers who come from the local educational, business, and arts communities. Anyone who is interested in opera and in supporting the company is welcome to participate.

OperaLancaster provides development and career advancement opportunities for singers and musicians coming out of local schools and colleges, and local music professionals who want to maintain and hone their artistic skills. Two singers, John Darrenkamp and Robert Brubaker, performed with OperaLancaster and went on to have international singing careers with the Metropolitan Opera and other companies.
