Opera Memphis Sets Sail with H.M.S. PINAFORE Image

Opera Memphis brings to the stage Gilbert & Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore. A rollicking, time-tested delight, this opera is packed with endearing characters, memorable tunes, and a hilariously topsy-turvy ending the whole family will enjoy. Performances are February 8 & 9 at 7:30 PM with a Sunday matinee on February 10 at 3:00 PM. All performances take place at Germantown Performing Arts Center. For tickets or more information please visit www.operamemphis.org or call 901.257.3100.

H.M.S. Pinafore opens with the gentlemanly Captain Corcoran of the good ship Pinafore and his daughter, Josephine, who loves the lowly sailor, Ralph Rackstraw. Though the Captain forbids their marriage, he finds himself in nearly the same position as his daughter. His former nanny, Little Buttercup, loves him deeply, but he feels he must hide his feelings due to his higher social rank. Adding to the chaos is the arrival of Sir Joseph Porter, the uniquely unqualified First Lord of the Admiralty, along with his veritable army of sisters, cousins, and aunts. The only hope of a happy ending relies on Little Buttercup, and the shocking secret she has kept hidden for decades...

Sung in English with English surtitles, H.M.S. Pinafore will be staged by University of Memphis Opera Stage Director Benjamin Smith and conducted by Opera Memphis Music Director Michael Sakir with music performed by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

Returning to Opera Memphis after nearly two decades is world-renowned baritone Robert Orth as Sir Joseph Porter, along with company favorite Gregory Gerbrandt as Captain Corcoran, and beloved Memphis soprano, Chelsea Miller, as Josephine. Rounding out the cast is mezzo Melissa Parks as Little Buttercup who delighted audiences as Ruth in 2016's The Pirates of Penzance.

H.M.S. Pinafore takes the stage for one weekend only at Germantown Performing Arts Center. Show times are 7:30 PM on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9 and 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 10. Family activities will be available in the lobby starting one hour before show time. For tickets or more information about the opera, please visit www.operamemphis.org or call our Box Office Monday - Friday 9 AM - 5 PM at 901.257.3100.
