As part of it's 2015/16 Season, North Carolina Opera will present a concert performance of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin on Sunday January 24 at 3pm at Meymandi Concert Hall in the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh.
Tatiana, young and earnest, pours out her heart to the brooding, worldly Onegin, to no avail. When she instead marries a wealthy older man, Onegin realizes too late his mistake. Tchaikovsky's stirring music, with beautiful arias, lively set pieces, and thrilling ensembles, will be heard for one performance only in its Triangle premiere. Opera will be sung in Russian with English supertitles.
"To do a musical setting of a beloved and well-known work of literature needs daring and skill." says North Carolina Opera General Director Eric Mitchko, "Tchaikovsky's take on Pushkin's great poem gives special warmth and depth to the characters. People will absolutely feel what Tatiana, Lensky, and Onegin are, and will be swept away by the beauty and drama of Tchaikovsky's music."
Performing as the leads in this production are returning North Carolina Opera favorites Soprano Joyce El-Khoury in the role of Tatiana (last seen with NCO in the title role of RUSALKA) and Baritone Joo Won Kang in the role of Onegin (last seen with NCO in LA TRAVIATA).The talented ensemble cast is rounded out by Tenor Eric Barry in the role of Lensky, Mezzo-soprano Zanda Svede in the role of Olga, Kenneth Kellogg in the role of Gremin, Mezzo-soprano Victoria Livengood in the role of Filippveyna, and Mezzo-soprano Robynne Redmon in the role of Madame Larina. This cast and the North Carolina Opera orchestra will be led by NCO Artistic & Music Director, Timothy Myers.
