The New York Metropolitan Opera's artists are facing wage cuts. Met manager Peter Gelb reports to DW on what he believes is at the root of the opera's financial troubles.

Mr. Gelb says that he is "trying to do is avoid a crisis" and "avoid the situation that has become prevalent in the non-profit performing arts world - particularly with opera companies in recent months and years -where companies are facing extinction because of an unsustainable business model."

He goes on to detail the operating costs of about $300-310 million per year and how that money is being spent.

Gelb also states "I see the future of the Met in danger if we don't take action. "
