Metropolitan Opera Cast Change Advisory: ROMEO ET JULIETTE

Charles Castronovo will sing the role of Roméo in all performances of the Metropolitan Opera's forthcoming production of Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, opening April 23, replacing Bryan Hymel who is ill.

Roméo et Juliette, the final production of the Met's 2017-18 season, is conducted by Plácido Domingo, with Ailyn Pérez as Juliette, Karine Deshayes as Stéphano, Joshua Hopkins as Mercutio, and Kwangchul Youn as Frère Laurent.

Castronovo makes his Met role debut as Roméo, a role he has previously sung to acclaim at Los Angeles Opera and Dallas Opera. As a graduate of the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, the tenor made his company debut as Beppe in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, in addition to singing Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni and Rodolfo in La Bohème with the company. This season at the Met he was seen as Tamino in both the Live in HD performance of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and the holiday presentation of The Magic Flute. Other recent engagements include Alfredo Germont in Verdi's La Traviata at the Paris Opera and Munich Opera Festival, as well as Don José in Carmen at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Edgardo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.
