Robert Dean Smith will make his Met role debut as Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca on January 18, 21, and 24, replacing Aleksandrs Antonenko, who has withdrawn due to illness. Casting for the role for the January 28 matinee broadcast will be announced at a later date.
Smith made his Met debut in 2008 as Tristan in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. He has also sung Bacchus in Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos and, earlier this season, Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly. His other recent engagements include Florestan in Beethoven's Fidelio at the Vienna State Opera, Bacchus at the Munich State Opera, and Siegmund in Wagner's Die Walküre at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Tosca, conducted by Mikko Franck, also stars Patricia Racette as Tosca, James Morris as Scarpia, and Paul Plishka as the Sacristan.
