Richard Strauss's inventive Ariadne auf Naxos, based around an opera within an opera and featuring a unique blend of comedy and drama, returns to the Met for five performances March 1-17. Soprano Lise Davidsen, following her acclaimed performances earlier this season as Eva in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, sings the title role for the first time with the company. Conductor Marek Janowski takes to the podium to lead Elijah Moshinsky's beloved production, which also features several artists making Met role debuts: soprano Brenda Rae as Zerbinetta, mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as the Composer, tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Bacchus, and baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle as the Music Master. Baritone Sean Michael Plumb makes his company debut as Harlekin, and Wolfgang Brendel returns to the Met for the first time since 2007 in the spoken role of the Major-Domo.
