LA Opera's annual residency at the extraordinary Theatre at Ace Hotel has become one of Halloween's most anticipated traditions. This year, cinephiles and music lovers alike can experience Alfred Hitchcock's horror masterpiece Psycho with its classic Bernard Herrmann soundtrack score played live by the LA Opera Orchestra.
That means it'll be even scarier than the first time you saw it.
You know the story: a secretary on the run, an isolated motel, and an awkward guy with some serious mother issues.
Nearly 60 years after its release, Psycho remains one of Hitchcock's most terrifying films. And with its iconic soundtrack, composer Bernard Herrmann redefined what horror sounds like. According to Gramophone, "in its implacable chill and stark, hypnotic beauty, Psycho represents one of Herrmann's most consummate achievements."
Conductor Louis Lohraseb (a member of LAO's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program who'll make his mainstage debut with Roberto Devereux later this season) will lead the musicians of the LA Opera Orchestra in live performances of Herrmann's celebrated soundtrack score as the movie plays on the big screen.
There will be six performances of Psycho-Live with Orchestra presented at the Theatre at Ace Hotel (929 South Broadway, Los Angeles, 90015):
Audience members on the evening of October 26 are invited to the Ace Hotel's annual Halloween after-party, A Hitchcock Halloween (21 and over) that evening. On October 31, LAO hosts its own annual after-party, also free for all ticket holders that evening (all ages welcome).
