To launch the season, the dazzling Ana María Martínez returns to Los Angeles as opera's most delectable femme fatale in a striking production, new to Los Angeles, of Carmen, filled with sensuality, danger, and intense theatricality. Another bonus: this will be the first time the world-renowned James Conlon conducts Carmen in LA. The season continues with one of LA Opera's favorite stars, soprano Nino Machaidze, taking the stage in The Pearl Fishers, a beautifully detailed production of one of Bizet's early treasures.

Next, Plácido Domingo continues his exploration of the Verdi baritone repertory with his portrayal of the title role in an exquisite staging of Nabucco, conducted by James Conlon.

Then, continuing our centennial celebration of Leonard Bernstein's birth, the free-wheeling and funny Candide takes the stage, featuring a brilliant score you'll immediately recognize, conducted by James Conlon. In March, LA Opera partners with the Joffrey Ballet and Lyric Opera of Chicago in a stunning new production of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice, directed, choreographed, and designed by dance legend John Neumeier and conducted by James Conlon. The mainstage season concludes with Rigoletto, a cornerstone of opera repertoire, featuring powerhouse performers Leo Nucci and Ambrogio Maestri in this timeless tragedy of sacrifice, betrayal, and revenge.

On November 17, 2017, join Plácido Domingo for a 50th Anniversary Concert, celebrating his profound impact on the cultural life of Los Angeles and beyond. James Conlon conducts the LA Opera Orchestra, as well as a legion of special guest artists in a gala musical celebration of Domingo's incomparable artistic legacy.

Then on May 20, 2018, Audra McDonald returns to LA Opera in a not-to-be-missed concert. The record-setting, six-time Tony Award winning Broadway legend brings her luminous soprano voice to an intimate evening of favorite show tunes, classic songs, and original pieces written especially for her.

First in the Off Grand series, the music of Philip Glass returns to The Theatre at Ace Hotel with La Belle et la Bête. Jean Cocteau's stunningly beautiful cinematic masterpiece is recast with an enchanting new soundtrack, performed live by the Philip Glass Ensemble and four vocal soloists synchronized with the actors in the film. Then, at REDCAT, Beth Morrison Projects returns with Persona, based on the classic Ingmar Bergman film. In an isolated summer house, a young nurse becomes caretaker of a stage actress who suddenly lost the ability to speak in this provocative and artistically complex depiction of human frailty, cruelty, and identity.

In 2018, Matthew Aucoin, LA Opera's Artist in Residence, brings his original work, Crossing, to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. Inspired by poet Walt Whitman's experiences during the Civil War, this haunting piece, composed and conducted by Aucoin, explores the connections that come between us and pull us apart, starring Rod Gilfry as Whitman. Finally, in June, The Broad Stage transforms into two different haunted houses in a double bill of one-act operas by Gordon Getty: Usher House puts writer Edgar Allan Poe at center stage, in an unsettling chiller that has all the classic elements of Gothic horror, while The Canterville Ghost puts a comic spin on Oscar Wilde's witty tale.

All programs, artists and dates are subject to change.
