Maria Callas is one of the most renowned and influential opera singers fo the 20th cnetury. Critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic gifts. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto opera of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini and also to the works of Verdi and Puccini. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

Her drmatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press. However, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bernstein called her "The Bible of opera" and her influence was so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her "neraly thirty years after her death, she's still the definition of the diva as artist -- and one of classical music's best-selling vocalists."

A specialist in Verdi and heavier belcanot repertoire, soprano Francesca Mondanaro reprises her recital with Fabrizio Melano based on the life and career of Maria Callas. Ms. Mondanaro's voice has been described as "conjuring up shades of the kind of Verdi soprano that has all but vanished...the voice itself is unforgettable -- voluminous, lush and beautiful, with a contralto-like darkness and an attractive vibrato" musicalcriticisn.com

Fabrizio Melano is an establsihed figure of the international oepra scene, having worked with leading opera houses throughout the world for more than twenty-five years. He began a long-stnading relationship with the Metropolitan Opera in 1970 and was a close persoanl friend of Maria Callas.
