The Indianapolis Opera will premiere Giacomo Puccini's The Girl of the Golden West at Clowes Memorial Hall on the campus of Butler University for two performances only on Friday, Mar. 21 at 8 p.m. and Sunday Mar. 23 at 2 p.m.
A classic Western, The Girl of the Golden West offers a handsome outlaw in disguise, a sheriff in hot pursuit and a garter-snapping, pistol-packing, poker-playing heroine who will do anything to save the man she loves.
Performed in Italian with English supertitles, the story is set during the year 1849 capturing the exciting era of the Gold Rush. The American West fascinated Puccini, and California during the Gold Rush was the perfect setting for one of his most memorable leading ladies. If you love Butterfly and Tosca, then you'll love The Girl of the Golden West's Minnie, too!
