Florida Grand Opera (FGO) is pleased to announce the first year of a unique summer program called YALA (Youth Artists Learning Academy). The program is designed to provide instruction for those who want to further develop their classical singing skills in a summer camp environment. The program was conceived by several staff members of Florida Grand Opera, many of whom are ex-professional opera singers. It is designed to fill a void in summer programming for young adults aged 15 to 19 who want to study and learn more about classical voice and opera, and to have the opportunity to hone their performance skills. The academy runs from July 11 to July 22, 2016, and will be held at FGO's Doral Center, 8390 NW 25th Street, Miami, FL 33122.

HIGHLIGHT OF CLASSES

Opera Fan Fiction

Program participants will explore some of the most beloved stories in opera. But what do you think was really going on between those famous opera characters; let your imagination run wild as you delve into the details of the beloved operas and take the stories to the next level.

Opera in Motion

Singers know that their bodies are their instruments. In this class participants will realize the importance of the physical aspects of singing. It will include Alexander and Feldenkrais techniques with a healthy dose of vocal health practices each day.

Opera in Infamy

This will be much more than just an opera appreciation class. It will give participants an insider's perspective on exactly why so many people love opera. They will also learn the style of singing musical stories and the eras in which the operas were written.

Other classes will include looking behind the curtain, where participants will learn about costuming, set design, lighting, stage make up, and casting; the art of singing in a foreign language so you sound like a native; improv-acting for the opera stage; and more.

The academy ends with a performance including all YALA participants.

The program is designed to give participants the opportunity to realize their full potential and gain confidence in a fun summer camp setting.
