Daniel Sutin to Perform Title Role in Metropolitan Opera's WOZZECK Tonight

Daniel Sutin will sing the title role in tonight's performance of Berg's Wozzeck, replacing Thomas Hampson, who is recovering from bronchitis. Hampson's illness also forced him to withdraw from the March 6 performance of Wozzeck, which was sung by Matthias Goerne. Hampson expects to be ready in time for the next scheduled performance of Wozzeck on March 13.

American baritone Sutin made his Met debut in 2002 as the Journalist in Berg's Lulu. He has sung five additional roles with the company, including Ping in Puccini's Turandot, Shchelkalov in Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, Pâris in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, and the One-Eyed in Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten, which he sang in a revival earlier this season. His recent performances with other companies have included Giorgio Germont in Verdi's La Traviata at Finland's Savonlinna Festival; Valentin in Gounod's Faust at Boheme Opera in Trenton, New Jersey; and Nachtigall in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg with Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Wozzeck, conducted by Met Music Director James Levine, also stars Deborah Voigt as Marie, Simon O'Neill as the Drum Major, Peter Hoare as the Captain, and Clive Bayley in his Met debut as the Doctor.
