Grammy-nominated soprano Caroline Worra takes over singing duties in Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's L'abbé Agathon - the world premiere operatic version this weekend at the Guggenheim Museum's Peter B. Lewis Theatre on Sunday, January 11 and Monday, January 12, 2009 at 7:30 PM. L'Abbé Agathon will be re-imagined by French visual artist Sophie Calle, with a film installation by Ms. Calle. Ms. Worra will also perform The Woven Child, the latest work from current Grammy nominee Tarik O'Regan. The evening also features Wendy Whelan, Albert Evans and Sébastien Marcovici in dances choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon to the music of Arvo Pärt. The program is presented by American Opera Projects and Works & Process at the Guggenheim Museum.
In November, Time Out NY profiled Ms. Worra as a "rising star" to watch. She has performed with New York City Opera and Glimmerglass Opera for six seasons and has just joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera. She was nominated for a Grammy for The Best Opera Recording for The Mines of Sulphur and her recording of The Greater Good was recently released. Ms. Worra has been a resident soprano with American Opera Projects as part of their program Composers & the Voice.
Ms. Worra will replace soprano Lauren Flanigan who will withdraw from both performances due to scheduling conflicts. Ms. Flanigan will perform Cleopatra at Carnegie Hall with the New York City Opera on Jan 15 and 16 as planned. Ms. Flanigan and American Opera Projects will continue to develop a series of monodrama projects that AOP will produce throughout 2009, entitled The Peter Jay Sharp Solo Project, of which L'abbé Agathon is the first.
