The Bronx Opera presents La traviata, Verdi's enduring masterpiece about the last days of one of the most famous courtesans. This is the tragic love story of Violetta, a selfless, terminally-ill woman forced into a questionable occupation and her true love, Alfredo Germont. Violetta must leave her love at the behest of his upper-class father and family. Will Violetta die alone and in poverty? Will Alfredo ever know the truth?

La traviata is as timely today as when it was written. Class-war and the demands of the privileged resonate today as much (if not more) as they did in the middle of the 19th Century. Violetta's illness and her fight to live echo the issues of the current healthcare system.

The Bronx Opera is one of the only companies still presenting such classic works as La traviata in English, and has done so for nearly a half-century. It is the oldest independent opera company in New York City, and received great kudos earlier this year with the New York premiere of The Rivals by Kirke Mechem.

The production is double-cast and features:

Violetta: Halley Gilbert / Jennifer Moore
Alfredo: David Guzman / Steven Wallace
Germont: Joseph Flaxman / Andrew Oakden
