Boston, MA - April 7, 2016 - Boston Lyric Opera closes its 2015/16 Season with composer Franz Lehár's classic comic operetta The Merry Widow, whose light-hearted fun within the fictional Pontevedrian Embassy in Paris plays out among international diplomats as the dark clouds of World War I gather on the horizon. This new BLO production of The Merry Widowopens April 29 for a five-performance run through May 8 at the Citi Performing Arts CenterSMShubert Theatre in Boston.

The Merry Widow marks the company debut for Canadian soprano Erin Wall as Hanna Glawari, here an ex-Ziegfeld girl and a rich young widow whose countrymen scheme to find her a suitable second husband who will keep her - and her husband's fortune - under the auspices of Pontevedro. Tenor Roger Honeywell makes his company debut as Count Danilo, the Pontevedrian nobleman long in love with Hanna whose family had disapproved of the previously penniless girl. Opera Annex alumnus Andrew Wilkowske (2011's The Emperor of Atlantis) appears as the frivolous and money-driven Baron Mirko Zeta. Tenor John Tessierreturns to BLO as the French military attaché Camille de Rosillon who pursues Baroness Valencienne Zeta, played by BLO 2014/15 Jane & Steven Akin Emerging Artist sopranoChelsea Basler (2015's Don Giovanni).

Based on the original libretto by Victor Léon and Leo Stein, the updated book for this production was conceived by stage director Lillian Groag and BLO Artistic Advisor John Conklin. This Merry Widow conjures Europe at the start of the 20th century, perhaps the last time the continent would be a place for trivial frivolity and noble chivalry. Hanna and Danilo's comedic love story remains despite warning signs of impending dark days ahead; the operetta's lovable characters carry on with disregard for political and social problems bubbling under the sheen of the times. Uniformed dignitaries from many countries populate the Pontevedrian Embassy's stunning Grand Hall and garden, where the action takes place, laying a distinctly edgier political tone on the more playful personal distractions.

BLO's new production boasts lavish and colorful Viennese Art Nouveau-inspired sets designed by BLO Artistic Advisor John Conklin, and conductor Alexander Joel makes his American debut. The production features lighting design by Robert Wierzel, choreography by Kyle Lang, who makes his company debut, and detailed period costumes by acclaimed Boston costume designer Gail Astrid Buckley.

"Lehar's The Merry Widow offers a dazzling range of quickly changing musical colors and plenty of infectious tunes to showcase an impressive line up of singers," says Esther Nelson,BLO's Stanford Calderwood General & Artistic Director. "The sparkling music combined with the witty book, harnessing the Zeitgeist of the end of an era, makes this a timeless masterpiece."
