Teater Universitas Indonesia proudly present Three Penny Opera the Musical.

Wrote by the famous German playwright Bertolt Brecht, Three Penny Opera present an outward elegance of the text itself and a story that is close to our lives.

Three Penny Opera is adapted by Indonesia's legendary playwright and the founder of the popular Teater Koma, Nano Riantiarno. Take the background story of Jakarta 1930, Three Penny Opera tells classic story about Juragan Picum, Pasar Senen ruler who mobilize a million poor people demand the hanging of Mekhit the King of Bandit. Various accusations around it, from Mekhit doing the rape, burning of houses, robbery, to Juragan Picum's personal vendetta against him. It has become common knowledge that Mekhit has great protection over all his crimes. The power come from the chief police, Kartamarma. Their plot became stronger especially with the blindsided legal support.

Teater Universitas Indonesia will set Three Penny Opera in Surabaya, during Japan invasion to Indonesia. The outline will be the same, but the story will focused on Jugun Ianfu (forced prostitutes for war soldier) and villagers, among politics, corruption and war stories.

Regardless of Mekhit's pseudo charismatic character that makes up the life story, enrich the triggering lust, love, revenge, envy, virginity and lenders to become something bittersweet and historical - this Broadway-style production will mainly use ludruk (local tradition for theatre genre), combined with beautiful music and trained cast from Teater Universitas Indonesia.
