Erstwhile weatherman and Today Show personality Al Roker caused a hurricane of his own after he touted his snoozing during DER ROSENKAVALIER at the Met, saying on Instagram, "So I napped a little last night during intermission at @metopera performance of #derrosenkavalier and 1st act...ok and in the 2nd act. Alright, 3rd act, too. C'mon! It was #fridaynight."
What he obviously thought was adorable--a photo of him grabbing some zzz's during intermission--operaphiles didn't find so amusing and turned to Instagram to dress him down. In particular, there was soprano Wendy Bryn Harner, who's on the Met roster and was not at all amused. "So I napped a little during the Today show. And then I napped a little more during the never ending Today show. Then I napped during the seventh level of hell/the seventh hour of the Today show...." You get the idea. Her snipe ended with, "TV is a dying art form and no one cares about it" and the tag, #rosenkavisshorterthanthetodayshow."
Instead of taking ownership of the situation--taking the high road and cutting things off at the pass--Roker chose to return to Instagram to chide the complainers, "the outraged opera buffs/fans" he called them, for "taking themselves too seriously" and "playing into a stereotype."
