Anthony Roth Costanzo will sing the role of Prospero in The Enchanted Island tomorrow evening, January 28, replacing David Daniels, who is ill. Jeffrey Mandelbaum will replace Mr. Costanzo in the role of Ferdinand.
Costanzo made his Met debut earlier this season as Unulfo in Handel’s Rodelinda. He has been singing the role of Ferdinand in The Enchanted Island since the production premiere on December 31, 2011. He also sang Prospero in the January 14 performance and in the second act of the January 12 performance. He was a grand finals winner at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2009.
Mandelbaum made his Met debut as Ferdinand on January 12, taking Costanzo’s place when he stepped in as Prospero, and repeated the role in the January 14 performance. He has sung Ottone in L’Incoronazione di Poppea at New York City Opera and was a district winner in the 2003 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
The Enchanted Island is a pastiche of baroque music by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and others, with a libretto by Jeremy Sams.
