Anita Rachvelishvili to Star in Great Performance at the Met's CARMEN, 2/22

Acclaimed director Richard Eyre's production of Carmen stars Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili in the title role of the seductive gypsy, a part she has sung to acclaim at many of the world's leading opera houses.

Aleksandrs Antonenko sings the obsessed soldier Don José, soprano Anita Hartig is Micaëla, andIldar Abdrazakov is the toreador Escamillo, led by Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado.

Carmen will be broadcast on THIRTEEN'S Great Performances at the Met Sunday, February 22 at 12 p.m. on PBS. (In New York THIRTEEN will air the opera at 12:30 p.m.)

Christopher Wheeldon, currently artistic associate of The Royal Ballet, created the choreography. When Carmen was presented in the Met's Live in HD series in 2010, it became the Met's best-selling transmission to date, and was later broadcast on Great Performances at the Met.

"The show caught fire, mainly on the strength of Ms. Rachvelishvili's vocal power and compelling stage presence, and Mr. Eyre's sure sense of dramatic pacing took hold," noted The New York Times. "With her smoldering, earthy sexuality she is ideal for the role, managing to seem untamed, almost unhinged at times, yet also coolly calculating."

This new broadcast of Carmen was originally seen live in movie theaters on November 1, 2014 as part of the groundbreaking The Met: Live in HD series, which transmits live performances to more than 2,000 movie theaters and performing arts centers in 69 countries around the world. The transmission reached a record-breaking 16 million viewers.
