On Wednesday, March 28, WQXR will present the latest installment of its "Classical Up Close" series at The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space with special guest, acclaimed tenor Lawrence Brownlee.
Brownlee - whose voice has been praised as "an instrument of great beauty and expression" by NPR - will perform arias and art songs that are core to his artistic identity. During the evening, Brownlee will also give a preview of the new song cycle about the black male experience, "Cycles of My Being," which he'll perform next month at Carnegie Hall. He will be accompanied by pianist Myra Huang.
Named the 2017 "Male Singer of the Year" by both the International Opera Awards and Bachtrack, Lawrence Brownlee has been hailed by the Associated Press as one of "the world's leading bel canto tenors." One of the most in-demand singers around the world, he has performed with nearly every leading international opera house and festival, as well as major orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Academia di Santa Cecila, Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, and the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra. Brownlee also serves as Artistic Advisor at Opera Philadelphia, helping the company to expand their repertoire, diversity efforts and community initiatives.
