BIO:
Stuart Douglas Bogie was born in Evanston, IL the younger of two boys in a loving home where creative endeavor was nurtured. He began formal music studies at the age of 10 with Gary Onstad, Tom Cifani, and Alfreda Burke while attending public school. In high school he attended Interlochen Arts Camp and Academy, studying with Deborah Chodacki. He graduated from the University of Michigan Music School and has been performing, arranging and composing professionally since '97.
Early in his career he worked closely with the Transmission (Colin Stetson, Zachary Mastoon, Andrew Kitchen, Eric Perney), performing high octane improvisational music on the clarinet and bass clarinet (1991-1999) and he was the recipient of a Meet the Composers grant during this period.
Upon moving to New York City he joined the new Afrobeat group Antibalas, picking up the saxophone and touring to over 15 countries, composing, arranging, and conducting for the group at various times. Known for his forward looking compositions "Indictment" and "Beaten Metal" Bogie enjoyed lively performances blending humor and improvisation with a strong sense of melody and rhythm. The group collaborated with Public Enemy, The Roots, Paul Simon, Madeski Martin and Wood, Sinead O'conner, and recorded on the Grammy awarded winning album Djinn Djinn by Angelique Kidjo.
As a multi instrumentalist Bogie has worked extensively with the groups Iron and Wine and TV on the Radio, providing arrangements and touring the globe. He has performed on Saturday Night Live, Colbert Report, Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Conan Obrien's shows numerous times, as well as various NPR stations.
In a brief foray into children's entertainment, Bogie performed as "Cousin Froggy" with theFunkeyMonkeys children's musical review. He wrote and coproduced several songs with head monkey Josh Sitron (Dora the Explorer, Allen Gregory). The group culminated in a long run of shows at the Daryll Roth theater in New York.
He worked closely with the producer David Andrew Sitek for several years, recording and arranging and eventually conducting a large ensemble at Radio City Music Hall, backing up Sitek's vocal debut for the Dark Was The Night concert.
A member of the original Broadway cast of Fela!, Bogie developed and performed the saxophone solos for the lead character (Fela Kuti), working closely with director/choreographer Bill T Jones. The musical won 3 Tony's and is currently touring the world.
In 2010 he traveled to Timbuktu with the group Sway Machinery to perform at the Festival of the Dessert. Later that year he arranged horns for Amadou and Miriam, among others.
Starting his own group Superhuman Happiness in 2008, Bogie has recorded 3 albums and performed throughout the Northeast - including Celebrate Brooklyn (2010, 2011). The group has recorded for the Red Hot organization for the Red Hot and Rio compilation (with Cults) and extensively for the upcoming Red Hot and Riot 2 comp.
Most recently, Bogie (with production partner Luke O'Malley) scored the feature length documentary How To Survive a Plague, recording with both Superhuman Happiness and Kronos Quartet for the soundtrack. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival (2012).
In his free time he enjoys bicycle rides, improvisational theater, and graphic novels.
