Armed with crates of boogaloo records and surrounded by New Orleans music in the streets and in the clubs, Los Po-Boy-Citos bring the Nuyorican sounds of boogaloo and Latin soul to New Orleans. The brand new dance they've created bumps in your speakers and burns on the dance floor, and the band has become a staple of the New Orleans nightclub and festival circuits.
Since they formed in a Garden District living room in 2006, Los Po-Boy-Citos have gone through three recording projects. Their debut CD, New Orleans Latin Soul, was recorded at Piety Street Studios in New Orleans with veteran producer Mark Bingham. It was chosen as a "Best CD of 2008" by WWOZ 90.7 FM, and carried the band to OffBeat magazine's award as the Best Emerging Band of 2008.
Next, the band went further retro: they recorded a 45 rpm 7-inch single on vintage analog equipment at the Living Room Studio in Gretna, LA. Collecting their original arrangement "Brand New Dance" with Willie Bobo's guajira "Trinidad," the 45 is a favorite of record collectors and boogaloo DJs worldwide. 2009 saw the band build its repertoire, reputation, and audience, leading up to their debut performance at the 2010 Louisiana Jazz and Heritage Festival. December 2010 saw the release of Brand New Dance, featuring four original compositions and arrangements that combine boogaloo classics such as "Tighten Up" and Richie's "Jala Jala" with NOLA favorites "Check Your Bucket," "Mr. Big Stuff," and "Fire."
Los Po-Boy-Citos continue to re-create, re-interpret, and re-invent the boogaloo. It's always brand new when they play it.
